Creating Essential Documentation for Existing Equipment

Maintenance and repair of electronic equipment have suffered from and continue to suffer from a lack of circuit diagrams. This shortage has been caused by a combination of actions that have included restrictive practices, company changes, increased use of products of various newer technologies, and manufacturers who disappear.

A restrictive practice situation occurs when the only support available is through a single OEM or the supplier. This creates a non competitive situation where the customer cannot seek an alternative provider. Whilst this may not be a bad situation for the customer, it does mean there is a lack of choice and a reliance on a single source of support.
There is the growing situation where no support is available as companies have been taken over, restructured or gone out of business. In the past 10 years this has happened to many famous and long established companies. This means there is no protection against these problems by choosing products from “reputable” companies.

There has been a dramatic increase in the use of electronics in all areas of industry and commerce. This has led to a corresponding increase in awareness to the cost of maintenance and support. Whilst the OEM or the supplier may be responsible for the installation and warranty, the customer will want the option to choose a different ongoing support solution.

The rapid acceleration of change in technology has given another dimension to the problems. There are many situations where products are made obsolete long before the useful life is complete. Frequently, these products are no longer manufactured or supported. A standard response from many suppliers is to offer an upgrade to the latest product or the nearest equivalent product. When the equipment is to be used within a large system, this solution can be unacceptable if the replacement is not totally compatible.

When products have to be returned to an overseas company for repair, the user is then faced with very high costs, extended repair time and loss of independence.

The Solution

RevEng is an exclusive system from ABI Electronics for the generation of professional circuit diagrams and schematics from an existing PCB. RevEng represents a safe, modern and accurate way of achieving professional schematics through a user-friendly, software led process where operators are guided from start to finish.  RevEng users who previously spent days, sometimes weeks, creating schematics using the traditional method (multimeter, pen and paper) from an existing PCB, have achieved huge savings in time and can now complete the job in just a few hours!
