Delivering An Enhanced Retail Customer Experience ...

FASThub is the most reliable, robust and efficient rapid charging system, promoting customer convenience and satisfaction, extending shopping time with unrivalled safety and security.

FASTHub Customizable Charging Solutions can be installed within customer waiting area furniture (such as desks or coffee tables) to provide mobile charging solutions that encourage patrons to linger longer in sales situations. The FASThub technology is installed underneath the furniture surface, hidden from view, and does not spoil the environment aesthetics. Each FASThub point can optimally charge up to four devices simultaneously via Apple Lightning, Micro-USB, and USB-C cables, or wirelessly using Qi technology. This game-changing solution charges mobile devices and laptops up to 3.5 times faster than historical charging speeds. FASThub can thus enhance the customer experience in businesses that want to invest significantly in the experiential aspects of the customer experience provided.

Research has shown that, while customers are waiting in a reception area, or sitting with service and sales personnel, they want to use their mobile devices and charge their battery at the same time; and that providing charging facilities promotes longer dwell time for better one-to-one engagement between staff and customers, resulting in increased spend results.  Analyzing customer behavior in automobile showrooms, for instance, has shown a strong demand from customers for 'stay & charge' solutions, and that providing those solutions gives a competitive advantage and brand quality differentiator.  ChargeBox can serve both visitor and employee needs in both private and public spaces.

What is V-I testing?

V-I Testing (also called Analog Signature Analysis) is an elegant but very powerful fault diagnosis technique for detailed fault finding of printed circuit boards, and is the test method of choice whenever circuit diagrams and documentation are lacking. In these situations, Comparative Analog Signature Analysis can be used by matching the “signatures” of a good PCB assembly with those of a suspect one; signature differences can indicate a potential problem. A major advantage when testing a board with a V-I Tester is that no power is required for - or applied to - the device under test. This makes it the ideal technique for evaluating “dead boards” which cannot be safely powered up. ABI's BoardMaster does it!

... and customer dwell time can result in more sales.  One technique is to provide free mobile device charging stations, either standalone or built into store furniture.  Customers will linger longer while their mobile device is charging!

The cost of repairing a circuit board ...

...  is about 10% of buying a new one, so why are we throwing them away so easily? The Solution to Our E-Waste Problem? Repair, Don’t Waste! Replacing faulty industrial technologies for new ones is wasteful, unnecessary, and aggravates the E-waste issue. According to the United Nations University, more than 50 million tons of E-waste are produced globally every year. It’s past due time for the replace-not-repair mentality to be phased out across the business spectrum. It’s an essential step to eliminating waste, lowering emissions, and saving precious resources.

What's "I3C"???

I3C is a medium-speed control and data bus interface for connecting peripherals to an application processor in embedded systems and a range of mobile, IoT and automotive applications Implemented as a 2-wire sensor interface I3C provides a superset of features available with the established I²C standard plus addition of high data rate modes that previously required an SPI bus 4-wire architecture. Launched in 2016, MIPI I3C is an evolutionary standard that combines the advantages of I²C and SPI while adding new features such as in-band interrupts, dynamic addressing and advanced power management. It is defined to maintain backward compatibility with I²C but at significantly lower cost, lower power and better scalability than either I²C or SPI.

I3C serial decoder is now included in PicoScope software.

The Pico Technology serial decoders team has been working overtime, adding yet another protocol to both PicoScope 6 (Stable) and PicoScope 7 (Early Access) implementations: MIPI I3C Basic specification waveforms can now be decoded, displayed and analyzed on any PicoScope with sufficient bandwidth and memory depth.

Trevor Smith, Business Development Manager at Pico Technology said: “As EDA tool vendors and silicon providers have delivered support for I3C it has become widely adopted by system designers. When their projects reach the integration stage engineers need the right tools to get their work done, and fast. For engineers who already have a PicoScope with bandwidth to capture the higher data rate signals, they can simply download and install the latest version of PicoScope software and get to work. If they don’t already have a suitable PicoScope they should go out and buy one right away!”

“I3C is backwards compatible with I²C protocol and many designs have a mix of both. The PicoScope I3C decoder makes sense of mixed I²C / I3C traffic. Furthermore, PicoScope can simultaneously decode multiple bus traffic using any available analog and/or digital input channels. Over 30 protocol decoders are now included as standard with the software, and there are more coming down the line.”

Measures currents from 1nA to 800mA with a 10pA resolution

Saelig Introduces NanoRanger® NR-01 3.5 Digit DC Nanoammeter - measures currents from 1nA to 800mA with a 10pA resolution. Supplied factory calibrated, eliminating the requirement for high-cost precision components, keeping the purchase price low.

NR-01 - an affordable, highly accurate 3.5-digit DC ammeter designed for accurately measuring very low currents.  With automatic dynamic ranging (9 ranges across 8.5 decades), NanoRanger® measures currents from 1nA up to 800mA with a maximum resolution of 10pA.  Each instrument is supplied factory calibrated, eliminating the requirement for high-cost precision components in the design, and thus keeping the purchase price low. The current is measured with a 12-bit ADC which is oversampled and automatically averaged to produce a 16-bit result. Samples are taken every 170uS. Readings are shown every 300mS, built up from 180 averaged samples to eliminate line noise (both 50 Hz and 60 Hz). An alternative 'Fast Sample' Mode can sample at 150 measurements per second.

The backlit 11-digit 128 x 64 LCD display provides a wealth of information for current readings; for instance, mA, uA, nA, and pA are all on one line. A Running Average reading (current and time elapsed) allows the user to measure power consumption of specific events, such as radio transmissions.   The Range Coverage Bar shows the ranges covered during the measurement; it can be ‘bracketed’ or limited to just one range. A signal-to-noise ratio display shows how much noise, or AC, is present on the current signal.  Minimum and maximum ranges can be adjusted to limit the auto-ranging, or fixed at a single range.

Reflecting on Impedance Matching

RF energy travels along transmission lines but what happens when it encounters a load or different type of line? The resulting reflections create standing waves of voltage and current, just as water waves do when they encounter an obstruction. The RF energy bouncing around in the line can create problems with digital signals and can result in extra losses.

This article takes a look at several techniques for dealing with the reflections and how the same techniques are used in circuit design. This is called impedance matching.

Designing a very low power device?

Need to measure picoamps? If you are developing embedded hardware that requires very low power, you need to accurately measure the current drain from standby up to its peak during normal operation. But what measurement device can you use? Many solutions to this challenge have ranged from very expensive ammeters costing thousands of dollars, to cheaper solutions that only have limited manual ranges. Even if you have an expensive six-and-a-half digit multimeter that promises one nanoamp resolution, the lowest current range is usually two milliamps and the absolute accuracy is plus-or-minus five hundred nanoamps. That is not good enough!
