Great review of Picoscope 2204A 10MHz PC oscilloscope

Circuit Cellar author Colin O'Flynn did a nice review of the economical Picoscope 2204A 10MHz PC oscilloscope: http://bit.ly/1NvTY2a

"Probably one of the best aspects of the PicoTech stuff is the software. Since they use the same software across their entire product line (e.g. their $7000 scopes use the same software as their $160 one), you’ll find way more features and more updates than companies that have segmented their software releases.
This $160 scope can use the digital decoding of serial protocols for example, which like any other scope includes CAN, LIN, I²C, UART/RS-232, SPI, I²S, and FlexRay. Again when comparing scopes be sure to check what you are getting, since a lot of off-brand scopes might just have UART or similar!"

Buy it here for only $149 w. probes: http://bit.ly/1N2n6zQ

Siglent Responds Quickly!

The engineers at the Siglent factory in Shenzhen respond rapidly to technical inquiries!

1) A large military contractor purchased a Siglent SHS800 scope. The top engineer/consultant loved the unit except for the slow Continuity Test function.

RESPONSE >  Siglent had a fix that required both some new hardware and new firmware. They had this ready in 3 days (counting the weekend). They sent Siglent USA the new FW and the schematic on the HW modification.  The customer is pleased with the rapid response to the issue. It will need an upgrade at Siglent USA. If they are then satisfied he will purchase the SHS800 scopes for all of their field service people.

2)   Another very large customer posted a requirement on a website to make some pretty complicated sweeping waveforms that had a certain phase offset. The new new SDG2000X function generators will do about 90% of what he needed but some engineering help was needed for the remaining 10%.

RESPONSE> Once again, Siglent engineering people had a modification to add the remaining 10% of what he needed to do. This took them less than 1 week to develop. The customer will soon have the new FW. The customer is thrilled and he is talking about multiple units. His words, “We are going to standardize on the Siglent SDG2000X generators for our ARB generator requirements.”

So once again, Siglent is working hard to be the best!

Creating Your Own Luck

Here's an interesting article on how entrepreneurs 'create luck'.  Apparently, it all depends on the right  networks, the right connections, and the right relationships.

The truth is life is not fair. For creative work to spread, you need more than talent. You have to get exposure to the right networks. And as unfair as that may seem, it’s the way the world has always worked.  The good news, though, is you have more control over this than you realize!

Google thoughts

What are folks searching for when coming to our website?  Rigol oscilloscopes seems to be the most popular item, but Teledyne LeCroy is also up there! There are quite a lot of people looking for an SD to USB adapter too, or SDIO interface.  We have the only one-chip solution in the VUB300.  GW Instek is also a frequent search, as are the Pico automotve scopes.  "Online" is a word that's often used - isn't that obvious??  Many searches include our supplier manufacturer names like Berkeley Nucleonic Corporation or Plessey.  They are ready to see on our pulldown menus! Frequency repsonse anlyzer searches will take visitors straight to our FRA Cleverscope page.

SEO is a world unto itself and optimizing our website to produce great search results that don't make folks "bounce" is a constant challenge!

Cheapest,smallest programmable power supply?

PSM-102  is a programmable 0-14V/1.25A power supply controlled via USB!  Priced at only $139, and 5.5" x 2.3" x 1.5", this may be the least expensive, smallest programmable power supply available.

The PSM-102 Power Supply fills the need for a small, lightweight, laboratory power supply. Based on modern switching technology, the PSM-102 eliminates the bulky, heavy power transformer and heatsink traditionally required in a lab power supply. The PSM-102 is also unique because it features full touch controls with no moving parts. With these innovations in power supply circuitry, the PSM-102 is compact and light enough to be carried in a pocket. The low pro le design ts easily in a briefcase. Combined with other Syscomp instruments such as the CGR-101 oscilloscope and signal generator and the DVM-101 digital multimeter, the PSM-102 power supply creates a portable, low-cost, analog electronics laboratory.

Making Sure EMI Tents Perform

It is vital that EMI shielding enclosures function to specific requirements, whether you are protecting sensitive data from espionage,  assuring evidence for data on seized mobile devices, or testing for EMI before product launches.

How can buyers of enclosures be sure they will perform? Product literature supplied by vendors often provides test data, but that must be carefully examined to see that the specific tests used will predict the functionality of the enclosure in actual operation.

Different tests offer different insight as to effectiveness. Tests of the enclosure’s material may give an indication of shielding effectiveness, but this is insufficient to predict usability. The fully assembled enclosure needs standardized testing to ascertain shielding effectiveness. Leakage may come from seams, vents, filters, I/O plates, or doors, shielding effectiveness should be measured through the wall at multiple locations and at various frequencies.

The minimum shielding effectiveness that is recorded anywhere throughout the enclosure is the critical measure for security applications. An IEEE-299 test of a high attenuation tent plotted on the chart below shows shielding effectiveness of at least 85.7 dB from 400 MHz to 18 GHz throughout this portable chamber. Peak shielding performance of 98.7 dB was recorded at 1 GHz on the side with the door.
Shielding Effectiveness, Double Layer Tent with Internal Vestibu

Specific applications may have unique shielding effectiveness requirements. dB measurements are logarithmic, a 60 dB rating is ten times higher then a 50 dB rating. Shielding effectiveness needs vary greatly with the signal intensity encountered, which drops exponentially with the distance to the source. Critical security applications to prevent electronic eavesdropping in hotels and office buildings may need to shield computer and cellular equipment’s RF emissions from reaching the next room or floors above and below.

Proactively managing your RF shielding enclosure’s procurement process is critical to assure the buyer gets the results they need for their specific application. Specifying shielding requirements in the request for quotation is important. For highly critical applications, you may need to assure that the specific enclosure you purchase, as manufactured and delivered, will actually work for you on the site where and how it will be ultimately used. In these sensitive situations, the request for quotation may possibly include a receiving verification process to assure that the specific enclosure as configured and delivered performs in the field as used. This may require third party testing of the enclosure on the site where it will be used, perhaps requiring the supplier to make field modifications to adjust for any shielding issues. We at Saelig work with customers with highly sensitive requirements to facilitate this verification process.

Picoscope Factoids:

All PicoScope 5200 series 60/200MHz PC-based oscilloscopes have a flexible resolution of 8, 12, 14, 15 and 16 bits.  And a built-in 20MHz low-distortion function generator (sine, square, triangle, DC level) that  allow you to do frequency sweeps. Combined with the spectrum peak hold option this makes a powerful tool for testing amplifier and filter responses. An sophisticated trigger tools allow one or more cycles of a waveform to be output when various conditions are met such as the scope triggering or a mask limit test failing.

Designing motion control systems?

Creating hardware and software for stepper motor control has always been time-consuming. A quick short-cut is to buy pre-programmed ICs or driver boards that has simple phase-drive commands for stepper motors with built-in selectable acceleration profiles to take the software burden off a main processor with a single command instruction for movement.

Lots of companies take this approach:  CNC and large cutting machine manufacturers, as well as medical instrument and test equipment designers.

Take a look - like these folks - at our pre-programmed JRKerr products! http://bit.ly/1JRdy9b

Saelig’s Real-Time 27GHz Spectrum Analyzers can see intermittent RF signals

The compact RTSA7500 Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer is a powerful, full-featured spectrum analyzer designed to analyze wireless signals in real-time (not progressively scanned). This is essential for seeing intermittent and frequency-hopped signals. The RTSA7500 has all the standard features of a sophisticated, expensive bench-top spectrum analyzer, but at far lower cost since it uses the display and processing power of an attached PC. Frequency controls, marker functions for tracking specific frequencies and multi-trace functionality are all included, as well as a real-time triggering for measuring complex data signals such as Wi-Fi and LTE. Sophisticated FPGA-based digital signal processing within the RTSA7500 enables the capture of elusive time-varying signals across an instantaneous bandwidth of up to 100MHz.

PC-less EasyLoader In-Circuit Programmer/Loader

EasyLoader is a standalone In-Circuit Programmer/Loader designed to provide a flexible and cost-effective solution for electronic device manufacturers, as well as for hardware design companies and their customers. It allows code upgrades on JTAG/SPI/I2C-compliant devices (like FPGA/CPLD/EEprom/Flash, etc.) or microcontrollers at any time during development, testing, or production. It avoids preprogramming during assembly and "first article sign-off" and update products with latest firmware quickly with this standalone device.

EasyLoader is a unique device for the electronics manufacturing industry, usable by almost anyone without error. Once configured using a PC, it can be disconnected and repeatedly used for a particular electronic product. An intuitive red/green LED interface indicates the operation status, making it ideal for manufacturing line environments.  This eliminates the need to pre-program before assembly as code releases can be loaded momentarily — just before a manufactured device is shipped to a customer.
